Home Run isn’t your typical baseball movie. Still, the story of all-star Cory Brand just may steal your heart.
Cory (Scott Elrod) seems to have it all — a major league career, a great batting average, beautiful homes and cars. But when his past threatens to overtake his present, Cory faces the reality that he may lose everything.
After a string of DUIs and endangering the life of his brother, Cory is told by his agent (Vivica A. Fox) that he’s got to make some changes. She sends him back to the small town he grew up in to do a recovery program and to fills in for his brother as a Little League coach.
Cory begins to find joy in the game again through the eyes of the young players — and one kid in particular.
He must attend a recovery program for eight weeks, so Cory goes to Celebrate Recovery, a Christian 12-step program, because it’s the only one available to him. Though Cory can’t wait to finish his time there, he begins to see something different in the people who attend. He even learns that his seemingly perfect sister-in-law has dealt with some major hurts in her past through Celebrate Recovery.
Along the way, Cory not only discovers that he can find freedom from his hurts and addictions, but that there may be a second chance for him — in life and love.
While this isn’t a story for young children, as it deals with the adult topics of addiction, drug use, alcoholism, abuse and pornography, it is a great conversation starter for families about where we can find true freedom. It’s also a great place to see what Celebrate Recovery has to offer. Though Celebrate Recovery did not produce this movie, it is central to the storyline.
